OCTOBER 2024

Making innovation happen was in the spotlight at our third annual conference, held at Monash College in Melbourne on Tuesday 3 September.

The 230 attendees heard from national and international thought leaders on solutions to unlock the future of building. Speakers included special guest the Hon. Sonya Kilkenny, Victorian Minister for Planning and Minister for the Suburbs. The conference was an opportunity to explore the tremendous community outcomes that can be achieved if we unleash the full force of our manufacturing knowledge and capability into the housing market and other building sectors. You can read the wrap up below.

Our research activity continues apace, reflecting our focus on the possible right now in Australia. We have launched 4 new projects since our last newsletter – on topics ranging from the implications of new technologies on work practices, approaches to coordinating early-stage building design, the comfort of 3D printed housing and guidance on modern methods of construction.

We are also making the most of opportunities to advocate for the culture of innovation needed in the building industry, through meetings with key decision makers and appearances at industry events.

As the CRC enters the second half of its funding term, we are considering how to continue driving innovation in building. Planning for this involves us allocating our remaining funding before the end of 2024. We are engaging with all our industry and research partners to develop a research program that delivers important social, environmental and economic outcomes across the community.

Building 4.0 Annual Conference 2024
Making it Happen

The third Building 4.0 CRC Annual Conference was an opportunity for the best minds in building and construction to discuss the burning questions facing the industry:

  • Making modern methods of construction (MMC) a reality
  • Housing retrofit and MMC
  • Ensuring equal access to affordable housing
  • Creating the industry of the future
  • New ways to deliver social housing
  • Regulatory reform and the industrialisation of building
  • New ideas and policy to improve building sustainability
  • Bold ideas for a better future.

As we look ahead, it’s clear that the future is not a distant concept but

something we are actively designing and shaping through innovative solutions and collaborative efforts. Thank you to all attendees, speakers and panellists for contributing to a successful and inspiring event.

Modern Methods of Construction Roadshow

Following our conference, keynote speakers presented at events in Sydney and Brisbane.

Project #21 stakeholder workshop
A recent workshop with stakeholders explored inspection and certification requirements for offsite construction – how it's done in Australia and alternative ways it could be done.

Conducted at bathroom pod manufacturer SYNC in Melbourne, workshop participants could also see modern methods of construction in action.

Our thanks to SYNC for hosting the event, as well as other speakers who shared their experiences, perspectives and ideas: Levi Robinson (Standards Australia), Sophie Cunningham (Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment NZ), Neil Savery (International Code Council Oceania) and Gary Rake (Australian Building Codes Board).

KPMG Construction Innovation Roundtable

Our CEO Prof. Mathew Aitchison joined international thought leader Kevin Masters and Business NSW Executive Director David Harding to discuss the challenges and opportunities to scale adoption of Modern Methods of Construction in Australia.

Modern Methods of Construction Masterclass and Knowledge Share

Researchers, partners and other stakeholders involved in Building 4.0 CRC Project #95 (Homes NSW MMC Program) spent 2 days exploring Modern Methods of Construction with Dr Jerker Lessing, Adjunct Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford University.

Exploring the Kit-of-Parts Approach in Multi-Residential Buildings

At our August Knowledge Share, Daiman Otto presented that a kit-of-parts approach in multi-residential buildings is far from being a one-size-fits-all solution. Instead, it involves a strategic blend of standardisation, flexibility and creative freedom.

Podcasts

Our Future Building Podcasts take a fresh look at the opportunities for change, examining news and trends. We recently launched 2 new episodes:

Ep 16. Gropyus: Germany's hottest building scale up

Co-founder Philipp Erler talks about starting the company, how to grow and sustain a start-up, and the environmental sustainability of industrialised construction. The company is founded on the belief that disruption is not only possible, it's necessary.

Ep 17. KOPE: The digital infrastructure behind the next wave of building innovation

KOPE co-founder David Flynn explains the digital infrastructure behind a kit-of-parts approach to building and construction. Part marketplace, part design software, part specification tool, KOPE is a one-stop-shop for building.
